Buddy Ebsen was an American character actor and dancer who portrayed a number of memorable characters throughout his professional career that spanned over 70 years.

He was born Christian Rudolph Ebsen Jr. on April 2, 1908, in the town of Belleville, Illinois, which was predominantly populated by German immigrants. His father came to the United States from Denmark, while his mother was a native of Latvia.

When Buddy was 10 years old, his family moved to Florida. He and his four sisters learned the art of dance at their father's dance studio in Orlando. In 1926, Buddy graduated from high school and initially pursued a career in medicine at the University of Florida.
