Biography
Alston Householder spent his childhood in Alabama where his family had moved shortly after he was born. After attending school, he entered Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where he studied philosophy, receiving his BA in 1925.Alston scott householder biography of albert einstein
He then went to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where he continued his study of philosophy, receiving his MA in 1927.
Householder then taught mathematics in a number of different places and began to work for his doctorate in mathematics.
He was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Chicago in 1937 for a thesis on the calculus of variations.
